THINK RESILIENCE!

One of the things Reverend Lora mentioned in her sermon on Sept. 12 was how we are learning to adjust to the way our world has changed and how to be together during this time. Another way to say this is that we are learning and practicing resilience.

In addition to the challenges of the pandemic, the hard work of becoming a more just society, and the frustrations of our polarized political system, we are also faced with the existential threat that is the Climate Crisis. The stronger and more frequent hurricanes and the horrendous wildfires in the news show that this threat is not in the future. It’s now.

However, there is hope. And the hope is that human beings are naturally resilient--and we can learn to be more so.

According to The Post Carbon Institute, sustainability starts with community resilience. Their free, online course Think Resilience “consists of twenty-two short videos (between 7 and 15 minutes long) that explore the interrelated crises of the twenty-first century, and what we as citizens, students, and community leaders can do to respond to them. The course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues we face, introduce you to (or refresh your knowledge of)
systems thinking and resilience science, and give you concrete ideas and strategies for how to engage in building the resilience of your own community.”

Horizon’s Green Sanctuary Task Force is facilitating a discussion group via Zoom on this course, which will allow participants to solidify concepts, share insights, connect what they learn to their UU values, and be ready to take action in their own lives and in their communities that leads to a more resilient and sustainable world. The discussions will take place via Zoom on 8 consecutive Mondays, 7:00 pm-8:30 pm, beginning October 5. It's okay if you can only attend some of the 8 Mondays, but please try to attend the first session.
