Horizon has a history of get out the vote (GOTV) and voting related activism. This election year we have accepted the challenge from UU the Vote to become a Good Trouble Congregation by engaging in voter registration, phone/text banking, letter/postcard writing, and other get out the vote activities.

We are coordinating our efforts with faith-based organizations such as Faith in Texas and UU the Vote, and other nonpartisan groups such as: Common Cause, Vote Forward, and the League of Woman Voters. A partial list of activities includes:

•     GOTV Letter Writing 6/25 & 7/23 – completed ___ letters

•     Film screening: Suppressed and Sabotaged: The fight to Vote – 7/12

•     Voter registration associated with the Forest Theater initiative – 8/11, and Ongoing as events are scheduled

•     GOTV Postcard Writing packets from TXUUJM: Late August or early September

•     Monthly GOTV Postcard/Letter writing campaigns

Letter and postcard writing campaigns have costs for postage, envelopes, and printing. Our goal is to send 5000 letters or postcards at an approximate cost of $0.70 each for a total of $3,500.  We have received a grant from the UU national organization for $500.

We must engage in voting activities like never before if we want our democracy to remain intact after the November 2022 elections. You may give at www.horizonuu.org any time in August by clicking “GIVE” and then selecting “Give to Share-the-Plate 83032” or by writing a check made out to Horizon UU Church with Horizon GOTV on the memo line. The offering collected on August 7th not marked as “pledge” will go to August’s Share the Plate for Horizon GOTV.
