Trans Inclusion in Congregations

  • Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church 1641 West Hebron Parkway Carrollton, TX, 75010 United States (map)

Update; As of 3/28/23: new registrants will be put on a waiting list. To be put on the waiting list, sign up in Horizon’s lobby or online HERE.
The UU movement has come a long way to LGBTQIA inclusion, but there’s still a long way to go. A 2018 survey of trans UUs found that only 44% of trans women and men and only 18% of non-binary people feel they are fully included in their congregations. We at Horizon are called to do better to fully live into our mission of “welcoming radically” and our vision of beloved community that helps all to thrive in a just world.

This six-session course explores the theological grounding of radical welcome: trans identity, experiences and spirituality, your own gender journey, the role of cultural inclusion, and how to engage in culture shift. You can participate online or in person. Class meets over 6 Monday evenings: April 10 & 24, May 8 & 22, June 5 & 19

During each session at 6 pm, we will watch a video by Rev. Mykal Slack and Zr. Alex Kapitan, two trans/non-binary UU leaders (or watch on your own prior to the session.) At 7 pm, we will begin discussion. Supplemental resources will also be available for participants to engage with on their own between sessions. Facilitators are Sandy Steele and Menaca Padakandla

IMPORTANT: We would love to hear from trans and non-binary members and visitors to discuss logistics and general content of the sessions prior to the class start date. Please email sandyjsteele@icloud.com
