February Share the Plate - Families to Freedom

Every year hundreds of Dallas area victims and their children are turned away from domestic violence shelters due to a lack of space. The nearest available shelter may be in another city or county, and too far for a victim to arrive.

Families to Freedom transports victims of domestic abuse to safety. We make it possible for victims to get far away from abusive relationships by providing rides to shelters across North Texas, and to family homes far away. We provide these services:

  • Car/van rides to domestic violence shelters in North Texas

  • Road trips to family homes far away, often over several state lines

  • Bus tickets or cheap flights to get far away

  • Fuel assistance for victims leaving in their own vehicle

Families to Freedom is based in North Dallas serving callers from 48 counties in North Texas. We transport an average of over 500 victims and children each year. Our bold volunteer driver team embarks on over 300 trips each year helping victims get far away and free. The organization was built on Unitarian Universalist views to serve all regardless of gender, being LGBTQ+, immigration status, heritage, and religious views. We even travel with pets!

In addition to your financial support, we always need donated car snacks, juice pouches, car seats, simple toys, and suitcases. Learn more at: FamiliestoFreedom.org. You may GIVE HERE by putting Families to Freedom in the additional information box. You may also mail checks to the church made out to Horizon UU Church with Families to Freedom on the memo line any time during February.
